Pooley Wines is a name synonymous with quality, tradition, and the pioneering spirit of Tasmanian viticulture. Established in 1985, this family-owned estate has become one of the Coal River Valley’s most respected wineries, producing some of Australia’s finest cool-climate wines.
A Family Legacy
The Pooley story began when Denis and Margaret Pooley planted their first vines at Cooinda Vale, near Campania, in 1985. Over the years, the family expanded their holdings to include Butcher’s Hill near Richmond, creating two distinct vineyard sites that showcase the diversity of the Coal River Valley.
Today, the third generation of Pooleys continues the tradition, with Anna Pooley and Justin Bubb leading the winemaking team. Their passion for sustainable viticulture and minimal intervention winemaking ensures that each bottle is a true reflection of its origin.
The Wines: Purity, Precision, and Place
Pooley Wines is renowned for its Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Riesling varieties that thrive in the valley’s cool climate and long growing season. The wines are crafted with a focus on purity and precision, using estate-grown fruit and traditional techniques such as whole-bunch pressing and natural yeast fermentation. The result is a range of wines that are elegant, expressive, and unmistakably Tasmanian.
The Cooinda Vale vineyard, with its northeast-facing slopes and alluvial soils, produces wines of finesse and complexity. Butcher’s Hill, overlooking the historic township of Richmond, adds depth and character to the portfolio.
The Cellar Door: Heritage and Hospitality
Pooley’s cellar door is housed in The Coach House, nestled between the vines and the heritage-listed Belmont Lodge on the outskirts of Richmond. Open seven days a week, it offers tastings of the full range of Pooley wines, along with cheese and charcuterie boards and, on weekends, wood-fired pizzas. The setting is as inviting as the wines. Guests can relax on the terrace, enjoy views of the vineyards, and soak in the history and charm of this special place. The staff are known for their warmth and expertise, making every visit both informative and enjoyable.
Awards and Recognition
Pooley Wines has earned a reputation as one of Australia’s top producers of cool-climate wines, with numerous accolades from critics and wine competitions alike. The estate’s commitment to quality, sustainability, and family values shines through in every bottle.
